Few gifts are more thoughtful than special handmade ones, so this Mother’s Day we’ve teamed up with three of our favourite makers to bring you our Mother’s Day Makeseries – three beautiful pressies for Mum for you to try your hand at making at home.
You will need:Strong card
Doublette crepe paper in the colour of your choice (petals)
Floral wire – 20 gauge
Green florist’s crepe and 40gsm crepe (stems and centres)
How to:Cut templates from strong card following the measurements on the template image below.
Cut a thin strip of crepe paper about 0.5cm thick and 10cm long against the grain of the paper and stretch between your fingers (1). To form the centre of the flower, glue and wrap the paper around the end of the floral wire to form a rounded shape at the top that’s about 3mm thick (2 – 4). You can cut the floral wire down to the length that you wish with the wire cutters at this point.
Cut four petals from doublette crepe, making sure the grain of the paper runs with the height of the template you are using (5). Apply a little scraping of glue at the cut ends of each petal and glue them around the centre of the flower at 90° to each other, overlapping as you go (6 & 7). The centre of the flower should be just peeking above the bottom of the petal (8).
Cut two strips of crepe for the stem against the grain, about 1cm wide and 15cm long (9). Cut two leaves from the green florist crepe, making sure you follow the direction of the paper’s grain (10). Stretch one green strip for the stem and glue at the base of the petals on the diagonal (11). Hold the flower with your right hand at the top of the stem and turn clockwise, bringing the strip of crepe down tightly with your left hand (12). Continue to the bottom of the flower stem, then cut and glue the end, pinching together to hold.
Apply glue to the stems of both leaves and then wrap the stem again, but this time, about 2.5 cm from the flowerhead, place the ends of the leaves on the strip before you wrap round, so they catch in the strip as you wrap (13). Place one leaf in then rotate the flower and strip, putting the other leaf in (14). Continue wrapping the stem to the bottom as before.
To make larger blooms, wrap three flowers together with thicker strips of crepe about 1.5cm wide (15 & 16).
To create a full hydrangea flowerhead, wrap sets of three blooms together in the same way.
We love the idea of using different colours of crepe paper to create a jug full of beautiful hydrangeas that will look fresh and pretty all year round.
